Magnolias are the forerunners of Spring at la Petite Rochelle. There are some thirty scattered in various parts of the garden. Their flowers open when their branches and the surrounding trees are still bare of any greenery. At the end of the first garden,  Magnolia stellata 'Chrysanthemumiflora' and M. loebneri 'Merrill' mingle their flowers with the young red foliage of Acer palmatum 'Shishio'.
